Report: Dempsey agrees to new 1-year deal with Seattle Sounders

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Clint Dempsey has signed a new one-year contract with the Seattle Sounders and will return for the 2018 season as one of the club's Designated Players, sources told Jeff Carlisle of ESPN FC.

Dempsey, 34, was in the final guaranteed year of his contract, and joins on a new deal although the club had an option at the end of his last contract. He's earned $3.89 million for the 2017 season on that pact.

Having scored 14 goals this season in 30 appearances, Dempsey remains a critical piece of the Sounders' lineup, and he's still in the hunt to win his first MLS Cup after missing his side's successful 2016 run due to a heart condition.

Dempsey overcame the setback and was named the 2017 MLS Comeback Player of the Year on Wednesday as a result of his successes.
