Wednesday brought an end to an emotional qualification stage, with Peru's victory over New Zealand completing the 32-team field that will compete in Russia next summer.
While there was jubilation among nations that will make their World Cup debuts - Iceland and Panama - and in countries that secured a spot after decades without qualifying, there was an equal, if not greater, sense of disappointment among World Cup regulars, such as Chile, Italy, and the Netherlands, which took a dip in form at the worst possible time.
