The New York Yankees' managerial search led to rejection after the club asked for permission to interview manager Bob Melvin, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Melvin is under contract with the Oakland Athletics until 2019 after signing an extension in September. The veteran manager was hired by Oakland in 2011 and helped guide his team to three straight postseason appearances, including two American League West division titles. He previously served as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-2009) and Seattle Mariners (2003-2004).

With the GM meetings underway, Brian Cashman said the Yankees would not be meeting with any candidates until Thursday, a group that includes former Yankees infielder Aaron Boone and San Francisco Giants bench coach Hensley Meulens, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Since parting ways with Joe Girardi, the Yankees have slowly begun to interview managerial candidates, starting with longtime bench coach Rob Thomson, and former Cleveland Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge. The club has also been linked to former major-league utility man Jerry Hairston Jr.
