The Montreal Impact appointed former Aston Villa and Lyon boss Remi Garde as their new manager Wednesday.

Garde becomes the Impact's fifth manager of the MLS era, replacing local boy Mauro Biello, who was sacked in October after the club narrowly missed out on an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"We believe Remi Garde’s tremendous experience, his vision and knowledge of the game and his intimate understanding of youth development will give this club a new start at every level," Impact president Joey Saputo told Wednesday's press conference.

Garde, whose last managerial appointment with Aston Villa ended in March 2016 as the Birmingham side sat bottom in the Premier League, led Lyon to a Coupe de France title in 2011-12.

A former defensive midfielder and centre-half, Garde enjoyed spells with Lyon, Strasbourg, and Arsenal, where the six-time capped France international joined Patrick Vieira as Arsene Wenger's first signings with the club.
