Report: Girardi 'not likely' to take over as Nationals manager

When the New York Yankees informed Joe Girardi he would not return as manager of the team next season, it appeared as though the Washington Nationals had another option for their own managerial vacancy.

That may not be the case.

Initial word out of Washington is Girardi is "not likely" to take over, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, who reports the Nationals don't believe in paying substantial money to a manager.

Girardi spent 10 years as manager of the Yankees, winning 910 games and a World Series in 2009, but New York decided it was time to pursue alternatives.

The Nationals surprisingly made the move to part ways with Dusty Baker - who had managed them to 192 wins over the past two seasons - which reportedly left players of the organization "generally upset."

Washington asked for permission to interview Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora before he was hired by the Boston Red Sox. Chicago Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez now appears to be on their radar.
