There was an unexpected winner at the Venice Marathon on Sunday after the six leading runners took a wrong turn.

The group - which included favorites Abdulahl Dawud, Gilbert Kipleting Chumba, Kipkemei Mutai, and David Kiprono Metto - was following a guide motorcycle when it went off course 16 miles into the race, according to The Associated Press. They were led astray for a few hundred meters before being redirected.

Eyob Faniel, who runs for the Venice Marathon Club, was about a minute behind the leaders at the time and went on to win in 2:12:16. He was the first Italian to win the race in 22 years.
