Everton's disastrous start to the season has culminated in the firing of Ronald Koeman.

Sunday's decisive loss to Arsenal was Koeman's last chance to salvage his dwindling reputation, with the announcement Monday that Everton had parted ways with the Dutch manager.

Following a disappointing Europa League home loss to Lyon that left Everton at the bottom of its group at the halfway point, the Toffees went on to let supporters down once again with a 5-2 thrashing against the Gunners at Goodison Park.

The result left Everton in the Premier League drop zone, as the Merseyside outfit has only collected eight points from nine matches.

A statement from the club read: "Everton can confirm that Ronald Koeman has left the club. Bill Kenwright, the board of directors and Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given over the past 16 months and for guiding the club to seventh place in last season’s Premier League campaign."

Making matters worse is that the Toffees have yet to see a positive return on investment since spending close to £140 million on new signings in the summer.

But, perhaps the most damaging failure was the team's inability to replace Romelu Lukaku and the 25 Premier League goals he scored last season before a summer switch to Manchester United.

Koeman's replacement has yet to be revealed, but Jason Burt of The Telegraph suggests Everton could be plotting a move for Burnley boss Seasn Dyche.

Dyche has also been linked with the vacancy at Leicester City following Craig Shakespeare's dismissal last week.

Koeman is the second Dutch manager to lose his Premier League job after Frank de Boer's dismissal from Crystal Palace earlier this season.
