Astros crack Severino's armor, chase him in 3-run 5th

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Brian McCann broke the tie, but Jose Altuve opened the floodgates.

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino was matching Houston Astros righty Justin Verlander pitch-for-pitch through four innings, but was ultimately bested in the fifth.

Severino lost his command, walking three while allowing two timely hits. McCann hit a ground-rule double that initially spared Severino from allowing the big inning, but Altuve was able to produce a perfectly placed single behind him, plating the next two runs.

It's only the second time all series the Astros have managed to score three runs in a single game, let alone in an inning.

If the Astros can hold on, they will force a Game 7 on Saturday night.
