Where does 2017 ALDS rank among Yankees' best playoff comebacks?

Never count out the New York Yankees.

Just four days ago, things looked bad in the Bronx when manager Joe Girardi, fresh off his nightmare-inducing non-challenge in Game 2, was showered in boos in Yankee Stadium to begin Game 3. The Indians were in the driver's seat, even on the road, needing just one win to advance.

Now the Yankees are preparing to face Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

Despite their once unfavorable outlook this fall, the Yankees have a history of unlikely comebacks, and Wednesday's win added another page to their growing chronicle.

Here's how their 2017 ALDS win ranks among their six greatest postseason comebacks.

6. 2003 ALCS vs. Red Sox (Game 7)

Aaron Boone could have hit 1,000 home runs in 2003 and he would still likely only be remembered for a single blast on Oct. 16.

Trailing by three runs against hated rivals the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees were inching toward panic mode in the eighth inning as they struggled to solve future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez on the mound. But Bernie Williams' RBI single, followed by Jorge Posada's two-RBI double, made Yankee Stadium erupt as New York tied up the Game 7 finale, setting the stage for the greatest moment of Boone's career in the 11th.

5. 2017 ALDS vs. Indians

While doubt about Indians ace Corey Kluber's health may overshadow their accomplishment, the Bronx Bombers, playing the rare role of the underdog, won't care. Girardi's failure to challenge Game 2's hit-by-pitch call was erased from fans' memories as the Yankees defied the odds to win Game 5 on the road after an 0-2 series deficit.

4. 2001 ALDS vs. Athletics

Derek Jeter dropped jaws in Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS when his defensive instincts allowed him to nab Jason Giambi at home plate to preserve New York's 1-0 lead in the seventh. It appeared to completely change the momentum of the series, too - the Yankees outscored the Oakland Athletics 12-7 in the next two games to complete the improbable comeback, all thanks to what eventually became known simply as "The Flip."

3. 1996 World Series vs. Braves

It had been a long 18 years since New York's last World Series, and this return to their winning ways marked the dawn of a new dynasty. In his first year managing the Yankees, Joe Torre and a rookie Jeter led the club back to the Fall Classic. There, closer John Wetteland set a record that still stands with four World Series saves as the Yankees won four straight after dropping the first two to the Atlanta Braves.

2. 1978 World Series vs. Dodgers

After losing their first two games on the road to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees couldn't wait to get back home, where they won three straight before heading back to Dodger Stadium. Capped by Reggie Jackson's revenge-fueled home run off Bob Welch, who struck out Mr. October to end Game 2, the Yankees emphatically took Game 6 on the road to win their second straight championship over Los Angeles.

1. 1958 World Series vs. Braves

A year after losing to the Milwaukee Braves in a heartbreaking seven games in the Fall Classic, the Yankees repaid the favor. Milwaukee looked poised to take the World Series again thanks to their 3-1 lead. That's when New York completely reversed course and earned victories in three straight games, including the 10-inning Game 6, to win their 18th World Series. It's still the only time the Yankees overturned a 3-1 series deficit.
