Timberwolves sign Andrew Wiggins to reported 5-year, $148M extension

Andrew Wiggins has put pen to paper on a contract that will set him and his family up for generations.

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Wednesday that they signed Wiggins to a rookie contract extension. Terms were not officially released, but the contract is reportedly worth the maximum $148 million over five seasons.

"I'm very excited to continue my career with the Timberwolves," Wiggins said in the press release. "I love it here. The fans and organization have supported me from my first day here in Minnesota.

"I want to thank (owner) Glen Taylor, (head coach) Tom Thibodeau, the entire coaching staff, and my teammates for believing in me. We've had some good times over the last three seasons, but the best is yet to come. I look forward to doing right by them and bringing this team to the postseason."

Taylor went on record weeks ago by saying that he wanted to make Wiggins a maximum player, but a few hurdles had to be crossed before the 2014 No. 1 pick finally signed.

Taylor first wanted to have a sit down with Wiggins over continuing to improve. Second, since the price was already settled, Wiggins fired his agent Bill Duffy which then came with a two-week refractory period in which he couldn't sign the deal. Third, the Timberwolves spent part of training camp in China, which again delayed the deal.

With Wiggins back in town, he finally re-upped with Minnesota, the franchise that flipped Kevin Love to acquire him back in 2014.

The 22-year-old Wiggins averaged 23.6 points per game last season while continuing his ironman steak of having missed just one contest in his entire career. He's not yet a complete player, but Wiggins has all the tools to become a game-changing two-way force.
