The father of Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson has apologized after criticizing Tennessee - the star pivot's former school - this past weekend.

Before Ferguson was piling up prolific numbers with the Tigers, he was buried on the depth chart at Tennessee behind Josh Dobbs, Justin Worley, and Nathan Peterman.

While the Volunteers were on a bye this week, Don Ferguson made the following, now-deleted post on his personal Facebook page.

He backtracked on those comments Wednesday.

"I should have just said going to Memphis was the best decision of his life," Don Ferguson told Geoff Calkins of The Commercial Appeal. "I should have left Tennessee out of it. They have enough things to worry about."

The move to Memphis has certainly worked out well for Riley Ferguson, who threw for 3,698 yards and 32 touchdowns last season. He has picked up where he left off in 2017, tossing 16 touchdowns, including an astonishing seven scores in last week's win over UConn.

Tennessee, on the other hand, finds itself in a quarterback predicament with the 91st-ranked passing attack in its first season without Dobbs at the helm. In an effort to jump-start the offense, it appears Butch Jones is benching quarterback Quinten Dormady in favor of Jarrett Guarantano ahead of this week's game against South Carolina.
