D-Backs, Prieto fined for having Apple Watch in dugout

Arizona Diamondbacks interpreter/coach Ariel Prieto has been fined an undisclosed amount for wearing an Apple Watch in the dugout during Wednesday's wild-card game against the Colorado Rockies, though Major League Baseball found no evidence he used it for any "baseball-related communication."

In a statement released Friday, the league said it conducted a forensic examination of the Apple Watch and his cell phone that led to the decision to fine both Prieto and the Diamondbacks.

"MLB found no evidence that Mr. Prieto used the Apple Watch or cell phone for any purpose in the dugout, nor any baseball-related communication on either device, during Wednesday's game," the statement read. "Despite these findings, Mr. Prieto violated MLB's on-field regulation by having this device in the dugout. As a result, Mr. Prieto and the D-Backs have each been fined an undisclosed amount. The amount of the fines will in turn be donated by the Office of the Commissioner to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico."

Following the Diamondbacks' 11-8 victory over the Rockies at Chase Field, Prieto apologized for wearing the watch, and told reporters it was on airplane mode the entire time.

"It was just an honest mistake," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday. "We asked, found out, and talked to Ariel, and that's what he told us. And in no way did it impact the game, and in no way is it going to impact the game tomorrow. It's just not something that we do or believe in."
