North Carolina State's Braxton Beverly: Still awaiting NCAA clearance

Beverly has yet to be cleared for the 2017-18 season as he awaits a transfer waiver from the NCAA, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Analysis:

Beverly is a talented freshman that could compete for backup point guard minutes, but NC State -- who applied for the waiver nearly three weeks ago -- has yet to hear back from the NCAA. Beverly's story starts with a commitment to Ohio State, but after the school fired coach Thad Matta, Beverly decided to leave the program and was granted a release from the letter of intent. Because he enrolled in the school, however, NCAA rules technically mandate that he needs to sit out a season prior to being eligible at his new program. As a result, his playing status will remain in limbo until a ruling is decided. In the meantime, Markell Johnson is expected to serve as the starting point guard, with Lavar Batts a candidate to pick up reserve minutes in Beverly's stead.
