Louisville releases letters sent to Pitino, Jurich following suspensions

The university of Louisville released its letters sent to head basketball coach Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich on Monday, outlying the reasons for their respective suspensions.

The letters, obtained by WDRB.com, were penned by interim Louisville president Gregory C. Postel, and justified the university's position in disciplining both men for their alleged involvement in a corruption scandal that has shaken college basketball to its foundation.

Pitino was placed on unpaid administrative leave on Sept. 27, while Jurich was placed on paid administrative leave that same day.

"The allegations contained in the complaint and affidavit of the Special Agent for the FBI, John Vourderis, insinuate a scheme of fraud and malfeasance in the recruitment of student-athletes involving you and multiple members of your coaching staff in violation of federal law and NCAA Division I Bylaws. These matters constitute material violations of your Employment Contract," reads one passage in Pitino's letter.

Jurich's letter was written similarly, encompassing the broader responsibility given to his role with the school's athletic department.

"The level of misconduct and criminal activity alleged to have been engaged in by your coaching staff, combined with the negative local, regional, and national attention brought upon the University of Louisville by the Athletic's Department, is unacceptable," Jurich's letter states.

Both men were ordered to cooperate with the university, the NCAA, and the FBI during the ongoing investigation.
