Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

Northern Illinois suspended linebacker Antonio Jones-Davis one game for intentionally gouging the eye of San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny during Saturday's game.

Jones-Davis will sit out the Oct. 7 contest versus Kent State.

"In speaking to Antonio today, he has taken full responsibility for his actions and voiced to me his disappointment in himself that he embarrassed the university and the football program," Huskies coach Rod Carey said in a statement.

Video of the incident went viral Saturday night, showing Jones-Davis reaching through Penny's facemask and into his eyes. The two were stuck at the bottom of a pile following a play.

Northern Illinois fell to the Aztecs and own a 2-2 record for the season.
