For a third consecutive season the Chicago Cubs will play in the National League Championship Series.
Chicago defeated the Washington Nationals 9-8 during a lengthy contest between the two clubs Thursday, which lasted nearly five hours.
Fourteen different pitchers were used in the game, including both Max Scherzer and Jose Quintana as relievers, while Cubs closer Wade Davis tossed 2 1/3 innings to finish the contest.
The Nationals failed to advance past the division series for the second straight season and still haven't done so since moving to Washington from Montreal in 2005.
Chicago, the reigning World Series champions, move on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS, beginning Saturday in Chavez Ravine.
