Multiple New Mexico players kneel during national anthem

Geoff Grammer

Several New Mexico players took a knee during the national anthem Saturday against Air Force.

It was a rare opportunity for college football players to be on the field for the anthem, as it was played at halftime and not prior to the game because of inclement weather. The anthem is usually played with both teams still in the locker room before kickoff.

The demonstration comes more than a week after Donald Trump criticized NFL players for kneeling during the anthem.

New Mexico didn't make the only statement of the day, as Northwestern walked onto the field locking arms prior to its game against Wisconsin.
