Playoff Percentages: Rockies barely holding on, Angels pushed to brink

Through the remainder of the regular season, we'll take a look at how the night's action impacted the playoff races, highlighting which teams' postseason odds went up or down significantly.

While the baseball world was still clamoring from Monday afternoon's excitement of New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and his rookie home run record, the focus shifted towards postseason races in the evening.

Several teams took part in important games that affected their playoff stances, and while some wound up on the winning end of things (Cubs and Astros), others scuffled in their respective races.

American League

In the AL, the Los Angeles Angels fell to the brink of elimination after losing the first of a four-game set to the lowly Chicago White Sox 4-2.

L.A. doesn't have much breathing room, sitting five games back of the Minnesota Twins for the second wild-card spot with six games to go, putting its magic number at 2 for postseason elimination.

Team Result Playoff Pct Change
Angels L 4-2 vs. White Sox 0.3% -0.6%

National League

While the Cardinals were dominated by their long-time rivals from Chicago 10-2, officially destroying their chances of winning the NL Central and pushing them further away from a wild-card spot, the Milwaukee Brewers made up ground without even playing a game thanks to the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position in a 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins, going 0-for-7 and leaving 14 on base. Colorado now only holds a 1 1/2 game lead over the Brew Crew for the final wild-card spot and a potential showdown with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Team Result Playoff Pct Change
Rockies L 5-4 vs. Marlins 72.3% -4.2%
Cardinals L 10-2 vs. Cubs 8.3% -2.1%
