D-Backs clinch wild-card home field on Martinez's walk-off single

The Arizona Diamondbacks clinched a playoff spot on Sunday afternoon, and a few hours later J.D. Martinez ensured they'll start October on home turf.

Martinez, arguably the best deadline acquisition of the summer, continued his red-hot run in the desert by lacing a walk-off single off Miami's Javy Guerra that lifted the D-Backs to a critical 3-2 victory. The win ensured Torey Lovullo's squad will host the National League Wild Card Game at Chase Field on Oct. 4.

Martinez's heroics only served to grow his legend among Diamondbacks fans. Since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers for a package of three marginal prospects on July 18, the pending free agent has slashed .294/.364/.734 with a whopping 27 homers and 58 RBIs in 239 plate appearances with his new club. For perspective, Martinez hit just 16 of his 43 homers in an almost equal amount of PA's (232) with Detroit prior to the trade.

Arizona had officially clinched its sixth playoff berth in franchise history - and first since 2011 - earlier in the day when both the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers lost their games.

If the season ended today, the Diamondbacks would host the division rival Colorado Rockies in the wild-card game. The Rockies - who did win on Sunday - have work to do to hold onto their spot however, as Milwaukee sits just two games behind them for the second wild-card spot, while St. Louis remains 2 1/2 back.
