The Big 12 made a significant announcement Friday, as Big 12 Board of Directors chairman E. Gordon Gee revealed a contract extension with acting commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

The extension will run through June 2025 and keep Bowlsby in the role he's held since 2012.

"On behalf of the presidents and chancellors of the Big 12 conference, I am absolutely delighted that Bob Bowlsby has accepted an extension on his contract," Gee said. "This is an important time for college athletics, it's an important time for the Big 12 and to have a valiant and committed leader in someone who understands athletics as well as anyone in this country leading our conference is something that is very important to the league and to the individual schools, and I believe, to college athletics."

Bowlsby expressing his contentment that both sides were able to keep their working relationship.

"I've been with the Big 12 for a little more than five years and we've had our challenges but we've also had our successes," Bowlsby said. "I like the institutions that I work with, I like my colleagues here at the Big 12 office. The contract is coming to a close, so we had to either extend it or decide that we weren't going to extend it, and I am pleased that we have and I'm looking forward to the next eight years leading the conference and looking forward to the things that we'll achieve."
