Temple somehow finishes with minus-4 rushing yards Thursday

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

If Temple played the entire contest against South Florida on Thursday without rushing the ball, the Owls would have somehow still had a more productive night in that aspect of the game.

It doesn't seem possible, but Temple actually finished the 43-7 loss to the Bulls with minus-4 rushing yards on 33 total carries.

Sacks count as negative rushing yards in college, and once backup quarterback Logan Marchi took a 19-yard loss on a fake field goal, the Owls were well below zero for the game.

Player Carries Yards
Rob Ritrovato 5 24
David Hood 5 13
Ryquell Armstead 11 3
Nick Sharga 2 2
Jager Gardner 2 0
Matt Hennessy 1 -3
Frank Nutile 3 -7
Todd Centeio 2 -12
Logan Marchi 2 -24
TOTAL 33 -4

While minus-4 yards is an astonishing total for an entire game, the Owls have struggled to move the ball on the ground all season. They opened with just 85 yards rushing against Notre Dame, and could only muster 79 against Villanova in Week 2. While Week 3 saw a slight improvement with 119 total rushing yards on the ground against UMass, it was fairly clear they were going to struggle against the Bulls on Thursday.

Temple wasn't exactly prolific in the passing game either as Marchi and Frank Nutile combined to complete just 7-of-25 passes for 89 yards and four interceptions. The 85 yards of total offense marks the lowest ever allowed to an FBS opponent in South Florida history.

After Thursday's performance, it's certainly going to be a fairly painful film session for the Owls' offense prior to next week's game against Houston.
