Old Dominion to start 17-year-old QB vs. Virginia Tech

Old Dominion's Steven Williams isn't old enough to vote, but he'll be starting a college football game at quarterback Saturday.

The 17-year-old pivot will get the call when the Monarchs take on No. 13 Virginia Tech and, despite his age, Williams' head coach has confidence in him.

"At 17 years old, he has to become the defined leader of this organization," Bobby Wilder told Ed Miller of The Virginian-Pilot. "I personally think he has the ability to do it."

Williams impressed last weekend when he entered the game against North Carolina, throwing for a pair of touchdowns and 139 yards. That effort earned him the start Saturday, while giving the offense an identity.

"I just sensed from our team, they just didn’t feel like we had any idea of who we were," Wilder said. "That’s what Stevie brings to our offense."

Williams certainly wasn't nervous about receiving an opportunity, as he noted he couldn't wait to get onto the field against the Tar Heels.

"When he said, ‘Let’s go,’ I ran and grabbed my helmet," Williams said. "I wanted to get in there so bad."

Williams will inevitably go through struggles as he learns the college game, but he'll have the comfort of not having to look over his shoulder. Wilder indicated the job is his.

"He’s not going to lose his job," Wilder said. "We’re committed to him, so we’ve got to grow with him."
