Former All-Star Raul Mondesi sentenced to 8 years in prison

Former All-Star and National League Rookie of the Year Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 60 million pesos for corruption and embezzlement of public funds while serving as mayor in the Dominican Republic, Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 reports.

Mondesi was elected mayor of his hometown, San Cristobal, in 2010 and served until 2016.

The 46-year-old spent 13 years in the majors, winning two Gold Gloves, before retiring in 2005. He spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, while also seeing time with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Angels.

Mondesi's son, Raul Mondesi Jr., currently is a member of the Kansas City Royals.
