Doug Collins is returning to the Chicago Bulls.

The team announced Tuesday it's hired Collins as a senior advisor of basketball operations.

The 66-year-old has more than 40 years of experience in the league and will use his expertise to help Chicago's front office and coaching staff in the rebuilding process. He'll report to executive VP of basketball ops John Paxson, who spoke highly of him.

"As our organization transitions into this next phase, we feel like Doug will bring valuable perspective with his vast knowledge of the NBA and the game of basketball," Paxson said. "His enthusiasm and expertise make this a great fit for the Bulls. As an advisor, he will regularly contribute observations, insights and suggestions, and he will be part of conversations throughout this building."

Collins played with the Philadelphia 76ers from 1973-80, earning four All-Star nods before injuries forced him to retire. In 1986, he was named head coach of the Bulls, and held the position for three years. He went on to coach the Pistons, Wizards, and Sixers, and also excelled as a broadcaster.

The Illinois native raved about the fit with his new (old) team.

"To be able to stay involved in the NBA and work with John, Gar, Fred and their respective staffs, while not having to leave my family and continuing to live in one of the greatest cities in the world - the fit couldn't be any better for me at this point in my life," Collins said.
