Butch Jones has some explaining to do

Georgia Tech

It's a good thing that Butch Jones will always have his self-proclaimed win in the "championship of life," because he may not be coaching Tennessee's chase for real championships much longer.

The Volunteers suffered a heartbreaking loss to rival Florida on Saturday, allowing an inexplicable 63-yard Hail Mary touchdown on the game's final play.

Losing to a rival is never good for a coach's resume, but it's the way Tennessee lost that left Volunteer fans hoping Chip Kelly gets a phone call from the administration this week.

Without question, Tennessee's most potent offensive weapon - and some would say only offensive weapon - is running back John Kelly. The junior absolutely torched the Gators for 141 yards and a score on the ground, and 96 yards receiving on the day.

Kelly only carried the ball on the ground 19 times but picked up an absurd 7.4 yards each time. Through the air, he averaged 16 yards on each reception.

Those stats make the following play sequence from the third quarter, inside the Gators' 10-yard line, absolutely mind-boggling.

This happened with Florida clinging to a 6-3 lead and both offenses sputtering. A Tennessee touchdown could have broken the Gators' back and given the road team the lead heading to the final frame.

In total, Tennessee ran seven plays inside the 10-yard line during the contest. All seven were pass plays. Only one of them was a completion, and another went for an interception.

It's not like Kelly's incredible performance came as a shock. The 5-foot-9 back opened the season with 163 total yards and four touchdowns against Georgia Tech, and followed that up with 140 yards in limited action against Indiana State.

Most will point to the Hail Mary as the reason Tennessee lost the game, and while that was the final deciding play, this contest could have been over long before that ... if Jones and the offensive staff had opted to give Kelly the damn ball.

They didn't, and once again Jones is left wondering how long his run at Tennessee will last.
