Cubs' Contreras suspended 2 games following outburst toward umpire

Matt Marton / USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras was suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions directed at home plate umpire Jordan Baker on Friday.

Contreras is appealing the suspension and will be eligible for Saturday's game.

With St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez at the plate with two outs in the fifth inning, Contreras and Cubs pitcher John Lackey began arguing with Baker after they believed he missed a strike three call. The following pitch was driven into right field for an RBI single by Martinez. While the play was still going on, Lackey and Contreras both confronted Baker at home plate and were involved in a heated argument.

During the exchange, Contreras threw down his catcher's mask, which bounced up and made contact with Baker's leg. Both Contreras and Lackey were ejected.

Lackey received an undisclosed fine for what the league labeled as "inappropriate actions."
