X-Rays come back negative on 49ers' Foster

Kelley L Cox / USA Today Sports

The San Francisco 49ers appear to have avoided a major scare, as X-rays on Reuben Foster's injured ankle showed no fractures, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced after Sunday's game.

The rookie linebacker was carted off the field in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers. He eventually returned to the sideline, but didn't play another snap.

It's unclear if Foster will miss any time, but he's optimistic about suiting up in Week 2.

Foster, drafted 31st overall by the 49ers in April, is expected to play a big role in San Francisco's defense this season. He was one of the most highly-touted prospects at his position to conclude his college career at Alabama, where he won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker in 2016.
