Jared Goff might actually be a good quarterback
The hiring of 31-year-old Sean McVay as Los Angeles Rams head coach in the offseason essentially came down to the fact he made Kirk Cousins a prolific passer with the Washington Redskins.
Hoping to replicate that success with former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, the Rams took a chance on the boy wonder coach, and through one game it looks like a damn good decision.
Goff didn't just look competent Sunday as the Rams throttled the hapless Indianapolis Colts, he looked downright dominant in running the offense. The former Cal standout threw for 306 yards with a sparkling 72.4 completion percentage.
Comparing those numbers to last season's stats make Goff look like Tom Brady.
| Stat | 2016 | vs. Colts |
|---|---|---|
| Comp. % | 54.6 | 72.4 |
| Yards per game | 155 | 306 |
| Yards per completion | 5.3 | 10.6 |
| Rating | 63.6 | 117.9 |
| TD | 5 | 1 |
| INT | 7 | 0 |
One of the main areas of noticeable improvement was Goff's ability to throw the ball down the field. He was 5-for-5 on passes over 15 yards in the first half, including this gorgeous touchdown to rookie Cooper Kupp.

Goff only connected on 36 percent of those same passes last year, the first clear sign that a solid offensive game plan is a massive help to the second-year pivot.
The Colts defense would never be confused with one of the league's best, and with star cornerback Vontae Davis missing the game due to injury, the secondary was ripe for the picking.
While that fact may water down Goff's accomplishments slightly, he still looked the part of a man in control of his offense. Eight different Rams caught passes on the day, with new receivers Sammy Watkins and Kupp leading the way.
The former Bills standout caught five balls for 58 yards, while Kupp finished with 76 yards including the touchdown. The ability to spread the ball around more than compensated for a very poor day rushing the ball by the Rams. The team combined for just 63 yards on the ground, with Todd Gurley averaging just 2.1 yards per carry en route to a 40-yard performance.
The lack of rushing attack would have absolutely crippled Goff last season, but with McVay at the helm, it's a new day in the City of Angels.
