Georgia's Smart: Win over Notre Dame didn't feel like road game

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

For years, Notre Dame Stadium presented one of the toughest road environments in the country.

That wasn't the case when Georgia rolled into South Bend, as the Bulldogs faithful filled at least half the stadium Saturday and made the affair look more like a neutral site contest.

It was certainly noticeable to Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart, who admitted the friendly crowd made them feel right at home and helped them to a 20-19 victory.

"We never felt like it was much of a road game," Smart said, according to Tyler James of the South Bend Tribune. "There were times, our quarterback was able to go on his own cadence, which you don't usually get to do on the road. You definitely don't get to do it on the road in the SEC. The fan base doesn't let you do that."

It's a huge non-conference win for Georgia and will certainly bolster its resume as it hopes to make a run toward the College Football Playoff. After a home game versus Samford next weekend, the Bulldogs kick off SEC play against Mississippi State on Sept. 23.
