NFLPA, NFL respond to Vegas PD: No grounds to investigate Bennett

The Las Vegas Police Union's request that the NFL investigate Michael Bennett following his comments about his detainment has led to a rare moment of unity between the league and players union.

Following the union's request to investigate Bennett's "false allegations" that he was improperly treated by police, NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith issued a statement thanking commissioner Roger Goodell for standing beside Bennett and claiming that the request for a league investigation is baseless.

I applaud Roger joining me in issuing a statement in support for Michael Bennett, but there are no grounds for the NFL to investigate our union rep and I look forward to Roger confirming the same.

The NFL agreed with Smith, issuing a statement through spokesman Brian McCarthy to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

"There is no allegation of a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy," McCarthy said, "and therefore there is no basis for an NFL investigation."

Bennett was detained by police outside of a Las Vegas casino the night of Aug. 26. He claims an officer threatened to "blow (his) f--king head off" before eventually releasing him.
