Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay refused to rule out Aaron Donald for the team's season opener on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, despite the star defensive tackle's contract holdout.

It was reported Saturday that Donald and the Rams were "not close" in contract negotiations, with the two-time All-Pro in the final year of his rookie contract. The Rams exercised the fifth-year option on Donald in April.

"We're still in the same place," McVay said via ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. "I know I kind of sound monotonous, (saying), 'We're trying to find a solution.' Which is exactly the truth. There's no update right now."

Donald is the NFL's premier defensive tackle and any time missed during the regular season would be a horrific blow to the Rams.

Tanzel Smart is expected to start in Donald's place if the three-time Pro Bowler refuses to rejoin the team.
