Virginia's Craig Littlepage retiring as athletic director

Jeremy Brevard-US PRESSWIRE

Craig Littlepage is retiring after 16 years as Virginia's athletic director.

Littlepage made the announcement Tuesday. He says he will remain in the job until a replacement is hired and then transition into a role in the university president's office.

He became the first black athletic director in Atlantic Coast Conference history when he was hired in 2001. Among the biggest accomplishments in his tenure was the building of John Paul Jones Arena where home basketball games are played and an unprecedented amount of success among the Cavaliers' athletic teams.

Virginia has won 13 national championships and 76 ACC titles since 2002, the latter leading the conference.

Littlepage has also served on numerous NCAA committees, including a five-year term on the Division I men's basketball committee and one year as chair.
