Sumlin: Starkel underwent surgery for broken ankle, could miss season

Things are going from bad to worse for Texas A&M after a humiliating 34-point collapse against UCLA on Sunday.

Head coach Kevin Sumlin confirmed Monday on his weekly radio show that quarterback Nick Starkel underwent surgery to repair a broken ankle, according to Sam Khan Jr. of ESPN.

Sumlin added that defensive back Donovan Wilson also underwent surgery on his foot, and that he's unsure if either player will be able to return this season.

"Whether those guy will be back all year or not, I don't know," Sumlin said. "But those two guys are out for a long time."

Starkel was removed from Sunday's game after taking a hit in the third quarter, needing to be helped off by multiple people. The redshirt freshman was taken to the locker room before returning to the sidelines on crutches.

In Starkel's absence, Sumlin will be forced to choose between the replacement from Sunday's game, Kellen Mond, or remaining options that include senior Jake Hubenak.

Wilson's absence will certainly hurt the Aggies' defense, as the senior is coming off a season in which he recorded 59 total tackles along with a sack and an interception.
