Mets' Flores 'feeling a lot better' after breaking nose, will see specialist

It was a frightening sight Saturday night when New York Mets infielder Wilmer Flores broke his nose after fouling a Brad Peacock pitch off his face.

Flores was taken to a Houston hospital after sustaining the injury and was diagnosed with a broken nose. On Sunday, his nose was swollen, but wasn't feeling worse for wear, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

"I'm feeling a lot better than I thought," Flores said. "It was a very scary moment."

On the field, blood rushed from his nose, and he told team trainer Ray Ramirez that his face had gone numb.

"The first thing I asked Ray was, 'Is my nose OK?' Because I didn't feel it," Flores said. "What I felt, it was nothing good."

The best-case scenario is Flores returns to the team as early as Tuesday when the Mets open up a series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Before being cleared to play, however, he will see an ear, nose, and throat specialist to make sure the injury isn't more serious than it appears.

If he is able to return Tuesday, he will have only missed one full game due to the injury.

In 110 games this season, Flores has hit .271/.307/.488 with a career-best 18 home runs.
