New York City FC fans, cross your fingers.

Away on international duty with Spain, club captain David Villa underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with a minor adductor strain, the national team announced Sunday.

While it's a minor injury, the team did not clarify if Villa would be available for Spain's upcoming World Cup qualifying tilt against Liechtenstein on Tuesday, though Villa will remain in camp as the squad prepares for another important Group G match.

The 35-year-old rejoined Spain after a long exodus and featured in his 98th match for La Furia Roja in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Italy. But an injury to Villa comes at the wrong moment for NYCFC, still chasing Toronto FC for the MLS Supporters' Shield down the final stretch of the season.
