Thomas takes different approach to playing No. 12 at TPC Boston

Course designers Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner made some significant changes to TPC Boston over the last year, but none greater or more controversial than the par-4 12th.

The hole played 461 yards last September, but this year it has been stretched out to 510 yards, with split-level bunkering down the left and right parts of the fairway.

On Thursday, Justin Thomas said that he wasn't a fan of the hole redesign. He showed as much in Friday's first round of the Dell Technologies Championship, as he elected to take another route off the tee by driving his ball down the 13th fairway instead.

"I knew that they were going to be confused, or not know what was going on," Thomas told Rex Hoggard of the Golf Channel. "But I just felt like that was the best way to play the hole today. I definitely hit it a little left of where I wanted, too, so that was even more left of where they thought it was going to be."

The reigning PGA champion would hit his approach just shy of the putting surface, chip on, and make a par en route to a even-par 71.

The 12th played as the hardest hole on Friday, producing a 4.448 scoring average, while only yielding only three birdies in the 94-player field.
