Report: Baylor wrote letter in support of Art Briles

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Former Baylor head coach Art Briles received a written letter of support from the institution in May, reports Mac Engel of The Star-Telegram.

Engel states the letter helped Briles briefly land a position with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The letter, obtained by the newspaper, was signed by Baylor general counsel Christopher W. Holmes, and was addressed to "Coach Briles," months after the 61-year-old was ousted from the school for a sexual assault scandal that engulfed the program under his watch.

Here's an excerpt from the document:

"As you speak with others regarding these issues, you can be assured you may make certain statements without fear of contradiction from Baylor based on the information currently known to us. In particular, at this time we are unaware of any situation where you personally had contact with anyone who directly reported to you being the victim of sexual assault or that you directly discouraged the victim of an alleged sexual assault from reporting to law enforcement or University officials. Nor are we aware of any situation where you played a student athlete who had been found responsible for sexual assault. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors."

The Tiger-Cats announced Monday that Briles would join the organization as an offensive assistant head coach, but the decision was quickly reversed as the team faced severe public backlash for the hiring.
