PGA picks: McIlroy primed to repeat at TPC Boston

With odds at 12-1 last week at the Northern Trust, it was too good to pass up a wager on Dustin Johnson, and the world No. 1 delivered with his fourth win of the season.

That marked the sixth time this year we've nailed the winner in these weekly picks, which gives us momentum as the playoffs continue.

With the FedEx Cup field now down to 100 as the Tour heads to the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, look for another top player to emerge victorious.

Favorite to watch (odds less than 20-1)

Rory McIlroy

Considering the sky-high expectations the golfing world has for him, the 2017 season has been considered disappointing for Rory McIlroy. The 28-year-old is winless on the calendar and has battled through a rib injury the entire year. He's still nursing the ailment, but his record at TPC Boston makes him the pick to win this week. McIlroy has captured the trophy twice in the last five years at this event - including last season - and that should give him endless confidence heading into play on Thursday. He's driving the ball as well as he ever has, and a strong week with the wedges should net him his first win of the campaign.

2nd tier (odds greater than 20-1)

Louis Oosthuizen

Against two of the strongest fields of the season over the past two events, Louis Oosthuizen has a second- and a 10th-place showing, so the South African comes to TPC Boston full of confidence. The 34-year-old has also proven over the past two years that he's comfortable with the course this week, notching top-12 finishes each time. Oosthuizen is firmly in the International team for the Presidents Cup, and will want to continue his fine form ahead of that event. At 33-1, he's a very strong bet this week.

Long shot (odds greater than 50-1)

Patrick Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay's first foray into the FedEx Cup was a massive success, as his 10th-place showing at the Northern Trust was the second-best debut in the history of the playoffs. The talented American led the field in greens in regulation and ranked third in strokes gained: tee to green. He should continue that strong run of form at TPC Boston this week.

Super long shot (odds greater than 80-1)

Ryan Moore

Ryan Moore sits 61st in the FedEx Cup standings, so a strong week is necessary to keep him rolling in the playoffs. Luckily for the 34-year-old, he's experienced success at TPC Boston previously, most notably an eighth-place showing last year. Moore struggled on the weekend at the Northern Trust with back-to-back 72s, but at 100-1 he's worth a wager this week.

Top-5 odds: 20-1

Hit this bet, buy a car (odds greater than 125-1)

Graham DeLaet

Usually we'd advise against taking a golfer whose back has forced him to withdraw twice in the past three events, but expect Graham DeLaet to power through the pain this week. The Canadian sits 74th in the FedEx Cup standings and will need a good showing to stay alive in the playoffs. DeLaet will also surely be motivated by the chance to play in the upcoming Presidents Cup. He currently sits 21st in the standings and was a star performer during his only previous appearance on the team, posting a 3-1-1 record. He'll certainly be considered again with a couple nice finishes.
