Colorado will be honoring one of its most memorable alumni this season, as the university announced plans to retire jersey No. 19 in honor of former Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam.

The announcement was made Friday at the university's annual football kickoff luncheon by longtime Buffaloes broadcaster Larry Zimmer. The retirement ceremony will take place Oct. 28 during Colorado's homecoming game against California.

Salaam took home college football's highest individual honor in 1994 after leading Colorado to an 11-1 season in which he became just the fourth player in college football history at the time to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a season. No Colorado player has captured the Heisman Trophy since.

Salaam died on Dec. 5 at the age of 42, the cause of which was later revealed by the Boulder County Coroner's Office to be suicide.
