Johnson finds success thanks to putter switch

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Dustin Johnson hasn't won on tour since March, so he felt it was time to switch things up with the flatstick.

The world No. 1 replaced his TaylorMade Spider Tour Black mallet for a milled TP Juno prior to the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at The Northern Trust, and it's proved to be a good move. Johnson has recorded rounds of 65 and 69 to sit near the top of the leaderboard at 6-under heading into the weekend.

"I just felt like my touch was a little bit off with (Spider Tour)," Johnson told the Golf Channel. "I was rolling it fine. I switched last year at BMW (Championship), but I went back to it."

The TaylorMade prototype has a similar look to the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 design he used to win the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club for his first career major title.

"I knew I've been rolling it well. Practicing the last couple days with it. I wasn't too worried about it," Johnson told Rex Hoggard of the Golf Channel. "I got a little bit more feel with the putter, instead of the Spider I was using. I was getting a little bit too mechanical and I was worrying about too many things when I was putting instead of just putting."

Johnson has gained 1.590 strokes putting through two rounds, and has averaged 1.733 putts per GIR.
