Indians place Kipnis on DL with hamstring strain

The first-place Cleveland Indians lost another key contributor for their stretch run Wednesday, placing Jason Kipnis on the 10-day disabled list with a hamstring injury - the same ailment that sidelined him for most of July and into August.

The second baseman was pinch-hit for in the third inning Tuesday by Yandy Diaz after playing through hamstring tightness, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. The 30-year-old was scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday, after which Kipnis was diagnosed with a hamstring strain, per Bastian.

Kipnis' first DL stint for the hamstring injury lasted just under a month. Since returning Aug. 6, he's slashed .204/.250/.449 as the Indians hold a 4 1/2-game lead on the second-place Minnesota Twins.

The Indians' DL already features position players Michael Brantley, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Abraham Almonte. In all likelihood, Jose Ramirez will take over second base duties, while Giovanny Urshela will man third base.

The Kipnis news comes less than 24 hours after the Indians placed both Andrew Miller and Danny Salazar on the DL.

Over 79 games this season, Kipnis has a .695 OPS - his worst rate since 2014 - and is hitting 20 percentage points worse than the league average by wRC+.
