Rays designate Plouffe for assignment

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays designated infielder Trevor Plouffe for assignment on Tuesday evening, the team announced.

In a corresponding move, Tampa Bay has recalled right-handed pitcher Andrew Kittredge from Triple-A Durham.

In 31 games with the Rays, Plouffe hit .178/.268/.247 with only one home run and two RBIs. He last appeared in a game on Aug. 19 against the Seattle Mariners where he went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts.

It's the second time Plouffe has been DFA'd this season after previously being jettisoned by the Oakland Athletics in June.

It's been a disastrous season for the 31-year-old, who signed a one-year, $5.25-million deal with the Athletics before the campaign. Over parts of seven seasons with the Minnesota Twins, he hit .247/.308/.727 with 96 homers and 357 RBIs.
