Georgia Southern's Shai Werts: Named starting quarterback for opener
Werts was named Georgia Southern's starting quarterback Monday, Nathan Deen of the Savannah Morning News reports.
Analysis:
Werts elected to redshirt last season in his first year with Georgia Southern, but has seen the majority of the first-team work throughout camp as a freshman. He's now officially been announced a starter for the season opener and that will certainly be a challenge for the freshman, as the Eagles start with a tough matchup against Auburn on Sept. 2. Werts is prided for his ability to be a capable passer and runner, giving him a dual threat look that gives Georgia Southern added flexibility in its play calling. That said, the fact that he's a redshirt freshman could certainly come with some road bumps early on as he becomes adjusted to playing at the collegiate level.
