Ibrahimovic returns to Manchester United on 1-year deal

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has unfinished business at Old Trafford.

Manchester United announced Thursday that the Swede, 35, has signed a new one-year contract with the club, adding that the well-travelled striker will don the No. 10 shirt this season.

"I am back to finish what I started," Ibrahimovic said of the move. "It was always mine and the club's intention for me to stay. I cannot wait to get back out on that Old Trafford pitch, but I also know that I have to take my time to make sure that I am ready.

"I have been working hard and will continue to do so to make sure I am in the best possible condition for my return to the pitch."

The outspoken veteran led United with 28 goals in all competitions last season. He's been sidelined since suffering a devastating knee injury that ended his 2016-17 campaign prematurely; Ibrahimovic tore his ACL during a Europa League quarter-final clash with Anderlecht in April.

As a result, his contract was allowed to expire in June, with the Red Devils deciding not to renew his deal at the time.

His rapid recovery, however, clearly turned heads at the club, convincing manager Jose Mourinho and Co. to bring him back.

"We are delighted Zlatan is on the road to recovery and we are equally delighted to have his ambition and experience back with us," Mourinho said of Thursday's announcement.

"After his contribution last season he deserves our trust and we will be patient waiting for him to return. I have no doubt that he will be important in the second part of the season."

Ibrahimovic is expected to be fully fit by December. By then, he will offer United sufficient cover for £75-million summer signing Romelu Lukaku, who is off to a flying start this season with three goals in two league matches.
