Report: Mets' Cabrera drawing trade interest

With their playoff chances looking increasingly remote, the scuffling New York Mets traded Curtis Granderson to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, and general manager Sandy Alderson may have the chance to unload another veteran before the calendar flips to September.

On Sunday, one source told Newsday's Marc Carig that interest in infielder Asdrubal Cabrera - a two-time All-Star who's logged considerable time at shortstop, second base, and third base this season - has picked up. Cabrera, 31, has an $8.5-million team option for 2018 that includes a $2-million buyout.

Now in his second year with the Mets, Cabrera's season has been a bit tempestuous. In late June, the infielder - frustrated that the Mets didn't notify him he'd be switching from shortstop to second base upon returning from the disabled list - told his agent he wanted to be traded, though he later changed his tune.

"I always want to be here," Cabrera told Dan Martin of the New York Post. "This is a great team. In that moment when I said that, I wasn’t saying I want to get traded. I was just saying it didn’t seem like they had a plan for me. … If they’ve got a plan, they should tell me."

Limited to 96 games in 2017 due to a strained left thumb, Cabrera has hit .262/.330/.394 (90 OPS+) with nine home runs and 20 doubles while managing a career-worst -0.5 WAR.

For Cabrera to be eligible for another team's playoff roster, he must be traded by Aug. 31.
