Texas' Herman: Buechele would start 'if we had a game tomorrow'

Two days after saying he's been outplayed by Sam Ehlinger in fall camp, Texas coach Tom Herman told reporters Saturday that Shane Buechele is likely to enter the season as the starting quarterback.

Buechele started all 12 games for Texas a year ago, racking up 2,958 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However, the sophomore appeared to be struggling to keep up with Ehlinger, a true freshman, in camp.

"Shane is playing well, but Sam has played better," Herman said Thursday. "We'll see where we are at the end of the week and if it's too close to call it's too close to call."

After striking out on the transfer market this offseason, the Longhorns will enter the campaign with Buechele and Ehlinger as their only two scholarship quarterbacks.

Texas opens the season - Herman's first following a two-year stint at Houston - Sept. 2 versus Maryland.
