Florida State's James: 'I got hit by a car 3 times growing up'

It's funny how bad things always seem to happen in threes.

Being struck by a car is a scary experience, and one that Derwin James apparently is all too familiar with. The Florida State defensive back admitted Thursday he was a rather reckless kid when it came to safe play in the streets to Andy Staples and Jeff Cameron on SiriusXM College Sports Nation.

"I got hit by a car three times growing up," James said. "I was bad, man, I was bad. I used to run into fences. I got hit actually twice by the same person ... It was just one of those guys, you know, local guy in the neighborhood ... One time it wasn't my fault, he was crossing the median and I was coming across on my bike and I didn't have any brakes on my bike.

"I had a bike with no brakes and instead of jumping off the bike, I ran into the door and I busted my head open. I had to get staples in my head for that one."

James added that the second time he got hit, he landed on the hood, and the third time he simply crashed into a parked car.

Thankfully, those encounters didn't result in more serious injury, as James became one of the highest-touted players in college football entering this season.
