Sale rebuffs hate from Yankees fans: 'I don't go to New York to make friends'

Chris Sale is aware New York Yankees fans may not think highly of him after he joined their hated rivals, the Boston Red Sox, this offseason. He just doesn't care.

Despite sharing a division with the Yankees and having already started 23 games for the Red Sox this season, Sale had yet to pitch at Yankee Stadium in 2017. He finally did so Sunday, limiting the Bronx Bombers to just one run on four hits while striking out 12 in seven innings in an eventual 3-2 Red Sox win.

After getting a taste of his reception, Sale revealed Wednesday there's no love lost between him and the Yankee Stadium faithful.

"You can feel it," Sale said on the "Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria" radio show, according to WEEI's Alex Reimer. "People in New York have never been really nice to me, but they hate me now. I heard some pretty interesting things out in the bullpen last time warming up. … I don't go to New York to make friends."

If Sale isn't trying to make friends when he faces the Yankees on the road, he definitely isn't amicable when he plays host either. In two combined starts at Fenway Park this season against New York, Sale walked a pair and allowed just two runs while recording 23 strikeouts. He was twice let down by poor run support, however, as the Red Sox scored just one run and ultimately lost both contests.
