With the Cincinnati Reds down 13-5 to the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, manager Bryan Price decided to save his bullpen, and helped create history in the process.
Price called upon Scooter Gennett to take the hill in the eighth inning, making the second baseman the first player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game and pitch in the same season, according to Christopher Kamka.
Gennett, who hit four homers against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 6 and also hit his 20th of the season Monday against the Cubs in the eighth inning before coming in to pitch, used a sidearm delivery that didn't provide him with the best results across his one inning of work.
INNING | PLAYER | RESULT |
---|---|---|
8 | Jason Heyward | BB |
8 | Javy Baez | 2-RUN HR |
8 | Justin Grimm | Groundout |
8 | Jon Jay | Flyout |
8 | Tommy La Stella | 1B |
8 | Ian Happ | HBP |
8 | Victor Caratini | Groundout |
Gennett summarized his performance in a perfectly deadpanned postgame interview:
