Virginia cancels football event due to ongoing Charlottesville protests

Ongoing protests in Charlottesville have forced Virginia to cancel the annual "Meet the Team and Movie Night" event for the football team on Saturday night.

"Due to the ongoing public safety concerns in Charlottesville and as a result of the declaration of a State of Emergency for Virginia, the University of Virginia is canceling all scheduled events and programming today effective at noon," the school said in a statement. "The men's soccer exhibition game versus Wright State at 1 p.m. (ET) and the Football 'Meet the Team and Movie Night' event this evening are both canceled."

The protests, which were originally planned after the city decided to remove a statute of confederate General Robert E. Lee, turned violent on Saturday when a vehicle plowed into a group of people marching against the protesters.

The mayor of Charlottesville, Mike Signer, confirmed that one person died in the attack, and a spokesperson told NBC News that 19 people were injured.
